Geological Disposal Seminar

In order to enhance public understanding, NUMO held series of seminars on geological disposal in cities where symposia have not been held in the past. In the seminar NUMO focused on dialogue in small groups (ca. 50 participants for each seminar), and increased explanations about safety measures and overseas situations on geological disposal programmes.

Opinions and questions from participants:

Some participants thought NUMO should increase the opportunity to explain the necessity of geological disposal to the public before explaining safety, and some of them had concerns about risk management and countermeasures for unexpected events. Regarding repository environments, participants had various questions including long-term stability of geological formation in terms of volcanic and fault activities; influence of natural events (e.g. earthquakes and tsunami); and effects of migration of radionuclides (HLW).
