Nationwide Symposia

NUMO has been carrying out nationwide consensus-building activities to enhance public understanding on the importance and safety of geological disposal. As part of such activities, NUMO co-hosted nationwide symposia with the Government (METI).

In 2015

1st Campaign

Venue: Tokyo, Takamatsu, Osaka, Nagoya, Hiroshima, Sendai, Sapporo, Toyama and Fukuoka (9 cities) in May and June
Purpose: Inform the public of the revised Basic Policy based on the Final Disposal Act as well as the overview of the geological disposal project

Total participants: 2,088 people

Mass media: 94 companies in total

2nd Campaign

Venue: Tokyo, Kanazawa, Sapporo, Niigata, Takamatsu, Osaka, Nagoya, Kumamoto and Okayama (9 cities) in October
Purpose: Inform the public of the revised Basic Policy as well as criteria for identifying the "scientifically preferable areas"

Total participants: 1,627 people

Mass media: 82 companies in total

In 2016

3rd Campaign

Venue: Tokyo, Akita, Matsue, Takamatsu, Sapporo, Fukui, Oita, Nagoya and Osaka (9 cities) in May and June
Purpose: Inform the public of the status of nationwide scientific screening as well as planned dialogue activities after the announcement of the "scientifically preferable areas"

Total participants: 1,561 people
