Nuclear Waste Management Organization of Japan (NUMO)
Akira Yamaguchi, President
NUMO received approval from the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) for an amendment to its FY2026 business plan on May 20, 2026. On the same day, NUMO commenced Literature Survey in Minami-Torishima Island, Ogasawara Village, Tokyo.
Upon commencing this Literature Survey, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the mayor and the residents of Ogasawara Village, who have sincerely engaged with the important challenge of geological disposal of specified radioactive waste.
The final disposal of specified radioactive waste is an important issue that must be addressed by Japanese society as a whole. To address this important challenge, we would greatly appreciate the opportunity to conduct Literature Surveys in as many areas across the country as possible, with the understanding and cooperation of local communities.
Going forward, in accordance with the “Literature Survey Plan” and relevant laws, NUMO will conduct the survey carefully and appropriately. In cooperation with the national government, we will also respond sincerely to the requests and other concerns raised by the mayor.
NUMO is committed to providing information to the public in Japan in a polite, careful, and highly transparent manner, while sincerely listening to diverse voices and opinions across the country. Through these efforts, we will strive to further deepen public understanding of the geological disposal project nationwide.
