International Association for the Environmentally Safe Disposal of Radioactive Materials (EDRAM), which brings together organizations from eleven countries responsible for implementing high-level radioactive waste disposal programs, released a joint video message in February 2026. In the video, representatives of member organizations introduce their respective national initiatives toward the geological disposal of radioactive waste.

From Japan, NUMO President Akira Yamaguchi participated in the initiative, introducing Japan’s geological disposal program, including the rationale for deep geological disposal, progress in repository site selection, engagement with the public and local communities, and the role of international cooperation.
Through the exchange of knowledge and experience among members, EDRAM serves as a valuable platform for deepening understanding of both common challenges and differences among national programs, and for advancing safe and sustainable geological disposal through international cooperation.
